When the Kansas City Chiefs play the Las Vegas Raiders in Week 16, three key offensive players will be sidelined.

These players are running back Jerick McKinnon (groin), wide receiver Kadarius Toney (hip), and left tackle Donovan Smith (neck). On December 23, Chiefs head coach Andy Reid informed the media of the absences (as reported by Chiefs Digest insider Matt Derrick).

Isiah Pacheco, an injury returner, veteran wide receiver Richie James, and rookie linebacker Wanya Morris will probably spell the trio.

Toney’s main problem the previous season was availability, despite his increased on-field output.

Despite a number of nagging injuries, he has performed a lot better at suiting up for games in 2023. However, drops and penalties have been his most recent setbacks. Only twice this year, including Week 16, has Toney been out of commission. Strangely, the Raiders will be the opponent for both absences.

In a very disappointing campaign for the playmaker, the former first-round pick of the New York Giants has amassed 169 receiving yards, another 31 rushing yards with one touchdown, and 14 first downs.

On Monday, December 18, Coach Reid made a suggestion that James might play a bigger role in Week 16. That possibility is only increased by Toney’s injury.

Another frequent name on the KC injury report is McKinnon. It will only be his third official absence of the season on Christmas Day, but like Toney, the veteran has been bothered by persistent problems all season long.

A-to-Z Sports Kansas City insider Charles Goldman noted prior to Reid’s announcement that “RB Keaontay Ingram would be in line to be elevated from the practice squad if RB Jerick McKinnon can’t go.”

Coach Reid hinted that James might have a larger role in Week 16 on Monday, December 18. And Toney’s injury only makes that more likely.

McKinnon is another name that appears often on the KC injury report. Christmas Day will mark just his third official absence of the season, but like Toney, the veteran has struggled with recurring issues the entire time.
