Newcastle United Captain Jamaal Lascelles Is Suspended Indefinitely for Violating the Club’s Code of Conduct

Newcastle upon Tyne, 7 May 2025 — Newcastle United Football Club has announced that club captain Jamaal Lascelles has been suspended indefinitely after a breach of the team’s internal code of conduct. The decision comes following an internal investigation into an off-field incident that allegedly took place over the weekend.

In a statement released Tuesday morning, the club confirmed that Lascelles will be removed from all first-team duties pending further review. While the club has not disclosed specific details surrounding the nature of the violation, sources close to the matter indicate the 31-year-old defender was involved in a “serious breach of professional standards” related to conduct unbecoming of a team leader.

Official Club Statement:

“Newcastle United can confirm that Jamaal Lascelles has been suspended from all club activities with immediate effect due to a violation of the club’s code of conduct. An internal process is underway, and no further comment will be made at this time. The club holds all players and staff to the highest standards of professionalism both on and off the pitch.”

Lascelles, who has captained the club since 2016 and is the longest-serving member of the current squad, has played a limited role in Eddie Howe’s side this season due to injuries and competition for places in the starting lineup. Nevertheless, he remains a respected figure within the dressing room and among fans for his leadership during the club’s rise back to prominence in the Premier League.

Manager Eddie Howe briefly addressed the issue in a press conference following the announcement.

“It’s a disappointing situation for everyone involved. Jamaal has been a key part of this team for years, but we have a responsibility to uphold the values of this football club. The matter is being handled internally with the seriousness it deserves.”

Newcastle United is expected to name a temporary captain ahead of their next fixture against Aston Villa. Midfielder Bruno Guimarães and right-back Kieran Trippier are considered the leading candidates to wear the armband in Lascelles’ absence.

The club has urged supporters to refrain from speculation while the internal review is ongoing.
