Planet Hollywood Faces Closures Amid Ongoing Challenges

Planet Hollywood, the globally recognized restaurant chain known for its Hollywood-themed decor and celebrity memorabilia, is confronting significant operational hurdles that have led to the closure of several locations worldwide.

Financial Struggles and Bankruptcy Filings

In October 1999, Planet Hollywood filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection, citing debts of $359.1 million against assets of $392.2 million. The company announced the closure of nine underperforming U.S. restaurants, including those in Chicago, Houston, and Miami, as part of a restructuring plan aimed at returning to profitability.

Despite efforts to revitalize the brand, including celebrity endorsements from Arnold Schwarzenegger, Bruce Willis, and Demi Moore, the chain continued to face financial difficulties. By 2001, the number of operational locations had dwindled to 35. As of May 2025, only three restaurants and four hotels remain in operation.

Additionally, the flagship Disney Springs location in Orlando temporarily closed for extensive renovations, affecting 468 workers. The renovation aims to transform the restaurant into a four-story stargazing observatory. Planet Hollywood International has pledged to give these employees priority in the hiring process once the renovations are complete.
