Couch to 5K UK Issues Official Statement Regarding Recent Developments

The NHS Couch to 5K app has achieved a significant milestone, with over 7 million downloads since its inception in 2016. In 2024 alone, the app saw 790,000 new downloads and 8.7 million runs completed, highlighting its growing popularity among individuals seeking to improve their fitness levels.

Developed in partnership with the BBC and the Department of Health and Social Care, the Couch to 5K program offers a free, nine-week running plan designed for beginners. The program guides users through three runs per week, gradually increasing in intensity to help participants build endurance and confidence in their running abilities. The app features motivational coaching from well-known personalities, including Dame Denise Lewis, Steve Cram, Sarah Millican, and Jo Whiley, providing encouragement and support throughout the program. Additionally, the app offers a “Buddy Run” feature, allowing users to pair up with friends or fellow runners, either in person or virtually, to enhance motivation and accountability

In response to user feedback, the app has introduced the “Beyond Couch to 5K” feature, aimed at helping graduates of the program continue their running journey. This new addition provides advanced training plans to improve speed, stamina, and technique, encouraging users to make running a regular part of their lifestyle. The NHS Couch to 5K app remains committed to promoting physical activity and supporting individuals in their journey towards better health and well-being. The program continues to be a valuable resource for those looking to start running, offering a structured and supportive approach to fitness.
