Fire Erupts at Barbados All-Inclusive Resort: Quick Evacuation Prevents Tragedy

Bridgetown, Barbados – June 6, 2025 — A fire broke out early Thursday morning at a popular all-inclusive resort on the island’s west coast, prompting a swift evacuation that authorities say likely prevented a major tragedy. No injuries or fatalities have been reported, and all guests and staff were safely accounted for by local emergency officials.

The Incident
The blaze was first detected around 3:45 a.m. at the Paradise Shores All-Inclusive Resort, located near Holetown, Saint James Parish. According to preliminary reports, the fire started in the resort’s main kitchen area and spread quickly through a section of the dining complex.

Guests were roused from sleep by fire alarms and resort personnel going door to door. Many described the scene as tense but well-managed.

“It was alarming to wake up to the sound of alarms and smoke outside the window,” said Lisa Grant, a tourist from the U.K. “But the staff moved quickly and calmly. We were out of the building within minutes.”

Swift Response and Evacuation
Within 10 minutes of the alarm, trained staff had evacuated hundreds of guests from several wings of the resort. Local fire services arrived promptly and contained the blaze within two hours. Their fast action kept the flames from spreading to guest accommodations or neighboring structures.

Resort staff provided emergency supplies, including water, blankets, and medical attention to those with minor smoke inhalation symptoms or distress.

Barbados Fire and Emergency Services Chief Inspector Damian Clarke praised the resort’s response:

“The early detection systems and the quick work of resort personnel were critical in averting what could have been a devastating outcome.”

Cause Under Investigation
While the exact cause of the fire is still under investigation, initial signs point to an electrical malfunction in a kitchen appliance. Fire safety teams remain on-site to conduct a full forensic analysis.

The resort has temporarily closed affected areas for cleanup and restoration. Guests are being relocated to nearby partner hotels or offered the option to reschedule their stays.

Guest Safety a Priority
In an official statement, Paradise Shores Resort General Manager Colleen Walters assured the public and guests that safety remains the resort’s highest priority:

“We are incredibly grateful that no one was harmed. Our staff responded with professionalism and compassion under pressure. We are now focused on assisting our guests, repairing the damaged area, and cooperating fully with local authorities during the investigation.”

Travel Industry Reactions
The Barbados Tourism Marketing Inc. (BTMI) issued a statement reinforcing its commitment to safety and praised the resort for its preparedness. Industry experts say the incident underscores the importance of rigorous training and safety infrastructure in hospitality settings.

Looking Ahead
The resort is expected to reopen unaffected sections within the next few days, with full operations anticipated to resume within the next two weeks. Guests affected by the incident have been offered refunds, complimentary accommodations, or rebooking options at their convenience.

Though the incident could have ended in disaster, the fast, coordinated response turned a dangerous emergency into a story of resilience and preparedness—offering reassurance to travelers about safety standards in Barbados’s thriving tourism sector.
