Packers Discharge Bo Melton, James Robinson, and Eric Stokes are expected back.
GREEN BAY, Wisconsin: Only a few days after adding receiver Bo Melton and running back James Robinson to the 53-man roster for the Thanksgiving victory over the Detroit Lions, the Green Bay Packers have released both players.
Due to injuries, both players were signed to the 53-man roster: running backs Aaron Jones (inactive) and Emanuel Wilson (injured reserve) were sidelined due to injuries to their knees and shoulders, respectively, and receiver Dontayvion Wicks was inactive due to a concussion.
Melton played six snaps on special teams and two snaps at receiver against the Lions, while Robinson did not play.
After a three-day weekend, the Packers only had practice-squad rookie Ellis Merriweather and veteran Patrick Taylor at running back when they took to the field on a bitterly cold Monday. When everyone else ran out for practice, AJ Dillon, the lead back against Detroit, was in the back of the Hutson Center pedaling an exercise bike.
Does Jones’ potential return to the starting lineup for Sunday night’s game against the Kansas City Chiefs stem from Robinson’s release?
Coach Matt LaFleur stated, “I think we’re a long way from that coming to fruition.”
Wicks returned to practice at wide receiver and is no longer undergoing the concussion protocol. With 20 receptions and 331 receiving yards, the impressive fifth-round pick is tied for fifth on the team in terms of reception average (16.6 yards).
Malik Heath, an undrafted rookie, took his place and played just 11 snaps while catching four passes for 46 yards.
Three starters who were inactive against the Lions returned to practice: safety Rudy Ford (biceps), linebacker De’Vondre Campbell (stinger), and cornerback Jaire Alexander (shoulder).
Back was also cornerback Eric Stokes, who was placed back on injured reserve after suffering a hamstring injury in Denver that prevented him from making his season debut.
LaFleur stated, “You’d be crazy to ignore any of the past, but I know he’s feeling really good and confident right now; otherwise, we wouldn’t have taken him off [injured reserve].” “Having him out there is fantastic. It’s wonderful to have him back out there because he’s remained a terrific teammate and attitude despite everything.
