The Charlotte 49ers have named Tomekia Reed as their ninth head women’s basketball coach. Three-time HBCU National Coach of the Year Reed joins Charlotte after an illustrious six-year tenure as the Jackson State Tigers’ head coach.

Director of athletics Mike Hill stated, “Tomekia Reed is a proven winner whose passion for developing young people through the game of basketball is inspiring.” “She will succeed even more in the community and on the recruiting trail because of her infectious enthusiasm.” We are thrilled to have her head our program because she shares our vision for greatness.

With five straight Southwestern Athletic Conference regular season titles and three SAC tournament titles, Reed elevated the program to new heights.

JSU, which is participating in its second consecutive NCAA Tournament and is seeded as the 14th team, led in the fourth quarter and came dangerously close to defeating No. 3 LSU. When JSU returned to the NCAA Tournament in 2024 as a No. 14 seed to play No. 3 UConn, Reed earned the respect of legendary coach Geno Auriemma.

In 2020, 2022, 2023, and 2024, Reed won the SWAC Coach of the Year award four times. With the 2020 championship, JSU won its first regular season title since 2008, and the 2021 tournament victory secured the team’s first trip to the NCAA Tournament since 2008.
