Three people with direct knowledge of the agreement announced on Tuesday that the San Francisco Giants have recruited manager Bob Melvin, luring him away from the division foe San Diego Padres. The individuals, who wished to remain anonymous, spoke to The Associated Press because neither team had officially announced Melvin’s appointment, which was probably going to happen by late Tuesday night. Melvin was the Giants’ choice, as first reported by The Athletic. Melvin, 61, will be going back to the Bay Area, where he was up, supported the Giants as a player, and managed the Oakland Athletics from 2011 to 21. There will be an opening press conference on Wednesday.
