“Very Good Group”: The Falcons Morris Raheem, Terry Fontenot Discuss QBs in Draft
Before the season begins, the Atlanta Falcons plan to add a third quarterback, and general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris think the NFL Draft is a good way to meet that need.

At the league’s annual owners meetings on March 26, Falcons general manager Terry Fontenot and head coach Raheem Morris announced that they would be adding a quarterback to the roster to complement Cousins and backup Taylor Heinicke.

Will the change be implemented in the draft? Fontenot gave nothing away.

“Perhaps,” Fontenot remarked. “We’re not going to start the season with two quarterbacks; we’re definitely going to add one. However, it might be the draft, or it might be earlier or later. We’ll approach that with an open mind as well.”

Morris stated that Atlanta’s choice to retain Heinicke as Cousins’ backup was influenced by the 31-year-old’s experience in the position, as opposed to Desmond Ridder.

Heinicke’s contract, however, is scheduled to expire following the 2024 campaign, and Cousins, whose deal guarantees him $90 million for the first two years but only $10 million for the remaining two, isn’t a lock to be in the starting lineup in 2026.

The Falcons have long-term questions at center as a result.
