Liverpool has set a £20 million asking price for a defensive star who has only made four appearances for the Reds.

According to reports, Liverpool has placed a forgotten defender with just four senior appearances for the team at a worth of £20 million.

Arne Slot will replace the renowned Jurgen Klopp as the Reds’ manager in the summer transfer window, which could result in a significant turnover of players at Anfield.

Sepp van den Berg, a defensive target for Southampton and Brentford, however, looks certain to depart.

The 22-year-old, who completed his transfer to Anfield in the summer of 2019, came up through the ranks of the Dutch club PEC Zwolle.

After spending time on loan at Preston, Schalke 04, and Mainz 05, Van den Berg has only made four first-team appearances for Liverpool in the last five years, three of which came in the Carabao Cup.

Nonetheless, the gifted center defender played in 33 of Mainz’s 34 Bundesliga games this season, leaving a lasting impact.

Van den Berg returns to Merseyside to see out his future under new manager Slot after assisting the German team in securing Bundesliga safety.

If the Reds decide to split company with the Netherlands Under-21 international before the new season, they will reportedly demand a £20 million price, according to The Athletic.

A Premier League team is pursuing Van den Berg.
The article also states that a number of teams are interested in Van den Berg, including Brentford and Southampton, who were just promoted.

Thomas Frank, a manager target for Manchester United, wants to bolster a Bees team that finished in the fight to avoid relegation this season after giving up 65 goals in the Premier League.

Meanwhile, Southampton, who defeated Leeds in the Championship play-off final last weekend, is already planning where to add players to their starting lineup.

But Mainz is willing to give the Reds star another loan at the very least, so the two are not the only teams chasing Van den Berg. Ajax and Wolfsburg are also in the running to sign him.

Now that Van den Berg is evaluating all of his possibilities ahead of the 2024–25 season, a lot will depend on how he plays Slot during the preseason. Many Liverpool periphery players are expected to start fresh.
